We Had COVID: A Cautionary Tale
2020 will likely be remembered and defined by the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and its impacts. And it’s easy to get lost in the large numbers: Over 566,000 cases in Canada, about 176,000 of those from Ontario. In late December, there are about 2500 new cases diagnosed per day in Ontario. And there have been about 15,000 deaths in Canada. Hopefully this post makes those numbers seem a little less obtuse. COVID-19 June 2020 Update
This is my 3rd monthly post about life during the pandemic. I am surprised that the pandemic is lasting so long! I guess I naively thought that after two weeks of lockdown it would be contained. Almost two months later and many, many restrictions remain. Below is a neat graphic about how COVID has eclipsed the bottom 7% of causes of death. 300,000+ deaths in 6 months is pretty daunting, but in context, it still is not quite in the top 10 global causes of death: I’m not entirely sure this should have been labelled a pandemic. COVID-19 May 2020 Update
When this lockdown started, I thought it would only be about two weeks. That was naive and shortsighted. In the many Asian countries that were hit first, it was 3-5 months before things turned a little more normal. It’s interesting to go out for groceries and see a contrast between how some people are handling this: Some seem to be listening, going out with masks and gloves and keeping distance. Others, seem to think nothing is wrong, no masks or gloves, loitering about, standing too close, and acting as if nothing is wrong. Obviously, a lot of people want this[…continue reading]
