Injured Confidence

Being injured has been (or still is) quite a learning experience. Losing several months of training was bad. Having my fitness level decline so fast was worse. But I’m starting to deal with the psychological scarring of that injury. I used to be invincible, unstoppable, and absolutely confident that I could do anything. Marathon? Yes! Back-to-back marathons?! Absolutely! I was even considering moving into ultra-marathons. Getting injured didn’t just shatter my body; it shattered my confidence too. Fingers Crossed

I am cautiously hopeful about the state of my recovery. There are good signs, but I don’t want to jinx it. I was super-sore for most of this week. My 19km long run on Sunday morning was a shock to my system. The morning after that run I was unusually sore. Then on Monday evening I had a weight training session with my personal trainer. By the end of that I was twitching in muscles I didn’t know I had. So, Tuesday and Wednesday were sore as expected. Run for the Second Beep

You’ll have to excuse me for being a little extra philosophical and metaphysical today. I think I’ve discovered the analogy of my season! Like many recreational runners, I use a “run-walk” system, similar to the McMillian system and the Running Room’s “10 and 1’s”. I recently figured out how to program my Garmin Forerunner 410 to beep the intervals automatically. I imagine the feature was intended for people doing intense intervals, not the laboured jog and walk that I do! Anyways, there’s a first set of beeps when the interval rest period comes up.
