Training Update
As you might imagine, my “Grand Plan” hasn’t been materializing the way I would have liked. There are some good and bad in there, and I think I’m learning to accept that.
I was swimming twice a week for a few weeks. I was able to do 2000 metres in about 50 minutes. I’m pretty happy about that. However, when I entered that data into my Dailymile account, it estimates I only burned 600 calories in that hour. When running, I burn double or triple that rate! I also don’t know if I feel any muscle or cardio improvement. The pool I was swimming at has closed for renovations, so I need to find a new place.
Gym workouts were going well. My trainer took it easy on me the first week, then nearly killed me in subsequent weeks. He’s on vacation, and I haven’t been back to the gym since he left. That’s not a good sign. I’ll get back into it soon, I promise!
I’m into the 2nd week of co-instructing my half-marathon clinic. It’s not really what I expected. Five days before the clinic was supposed to start, I knew all three people that were registered. I knew those three people pretty well , so based on those three students, I knew exactly what I wanted to do to help them improve. On the first night of the clinic there were 11 people! Not only was I a little overwhelmed, but a little lost because I knew so little about these people. I also feel torn in this clinic. I want to go with the fast people, but I can’t leave the slower ones behind. Oh well, only 14 weeks left.
I’ve been really good about attending my Virya Flow Yoga class. Unfortaunately it’s not scheduled to continue on December. I guess I’ll be hitting the gym instead.
Over the last two weeks, I’ve missed a lot of gym and swims. We just finished a renovation and the cleaning up and sorting things is taking a lot of time and energy. Hopefully when that’s finally done I’ll be able to concentrate on training again.
I’d like to do a lot of races this December like last year. However, most of these races happen on Saturdays, and I’d like to do long runs in preparation for the Disney Marathon. I could consider these races as tempo runs. Runs I’d like to do include:
- Santa Shuffle 5k, December 3
- Santa Clause 5k, December 10
- Egg Nog Jog 10k, December 11
- Boxing Day 10 Miler, December 26
- Resolution Run 5k, December 31
Anyone want to join me for these?
I’m also thinking of incorporating a couple of new, trendy things into my running trianing. Hundred-Ups, seem to be the latest trend in running training. It’s not actually a new thing -it’s from over 100 years ago- but has recently become very popular for discussion on Dailymile and other forums. Some of my Dailymile friends speak very highly of this workout. I’m also going to start including some Yasso 800s in my solo training runs.
We’ll see how this goes…
Keep it up Paul, it might sound like you are torn with your athletic activities, but it’s a good challenge for yourself! Always remember that you are allowed to let life happen and to live it too!
Great on the swims btw! I usually do 1500m and start getting nauseated that I have to run out of the pool otherwise I’ll throw up. lol
